Opportunity Overview
Contents Consulting is seeking an Apparel Specialist to join our part-time remote team, handling valuations for designer and custom apparel and apparel-related personal property items submitted as part of insurance claims.
This role is best suited for a current or former professional with hands-on experience in the fashion or luxury goods industry who brings a sharp eye for quality, strong market knowledge, and has an interest in applying their expertise in an insurance valuation context. We’ll also consider candidates that have recently graduated with a degree in Fashion Design or Fashion or Fashion Design Management and have related experience gained through internships or part-time jobs.
New team members begin with the assignment of apparel items to be valued in straightforward claims and progress to greater complexity over time, with full support from experienced colleagues throughout. Research in both the secondary vintage market as well as current retail market is typically required.
Compensation and Schedule
Compensation is commensurate with experience and will be discussed with candidates individually.
Hours: Part-time, approximately 15 to 20 hours per week. Workload fluctuates seasonally based on weather-related claims activity.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate and value designer and custom apparel, handbags, footwear, and related accessories for insurance claims
- Collaboration with team members, including Doreen Ruff, on claim reviews, quality checks, and training
- Consult with senior team members on complex or high-value claims
- Process invoices related to procurement fees and associated expenses
- Prepare written valuation reports using established boilerplate templates, incorporating team review feedback
- Progress through increasingly complex claims as experience and confidence develop
- Occasionally conduct on-site visits for significant local losses (rare; optional field participation available)

- Designer and couture apparel from recognized fashion houses
- Custom and made-to-measure clothing
- Luxury handbags and small leather goods
- Designer footwear
- Accessories including jewelry, scarves, belts, and eyewear
- Vintage and collectible fashion items
Qualifications
Required
- Strong knowledge of designer apparel, luxury goods, and current market pricing
- Familiarity with fashion houses, retail channels, and custom or bespoke procurement
- Understanding of authentication, condition assessment, and resale value for luxury items
- Knowledge of fine fabric and exotic skin materials and high-quality workmanship and astute attention to detail in reviewing images of apparel and related goods for valuation
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively obtain information from designer fashion houses and custom clothiers where online information is not available
- Proficient computer skills, including email, document management, and standard office applications (essential)
- Strong written communication skills for preparing clear, accurate valuation reports
Preferred
- Background in fashion retail, luxury goods, personal shopping, or styling
- Experience in procurement, appraisal, or insurance-related work within the fashion or luxury industry
- Familiarity with insurance claims documentation or loss assessment processes
