Technical Designer Job Description
Position Summary
The Technical Designer is responsible for translating design concepts into production-ready garments by developing technical specifications, managing fit and construction. The tech designer collaborates with product development teams throughout the seasonal development process. This role ensures garments meet company standards for fit, quality, construction, and ease of manufacturing. Maintain accurate product data and supporting efficient communication with multiple global agents and factory partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and update detailed technical packages (Tech Packs), including garment specifications, grading, construction details, and bill of materials.
- Measure garments and evaluate construction, workmanship, and fit to ensure consistency with design intent and quality standards.
- Conduct comprehensive fit analysis, documenting fit comments, recommended corrections, and technical solutions for sample revisions.
- Lead fit sessions in partnership with Merchant, ensuring alignment on fit intent, quality expectations, and product consistency.
- Communicate technical comments, pattern corrections, and construction updates to factories, ensuring clear understanding and timely execution.
- Coordinate, request, and track fit samples throughout the product development calendar.
- Manage style data, specifications, and technical updates within Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
- Create, modify, and maintain 3D garment simulations using Browzwear VStitcher to support virtual fitting, design visualization, and development efficiencies.
- Review DXF patterns to verify pattern integrity, grading accuracy, construction details, and production readiness.
- Collaborate closely with Design, Product Development/Sourcing, and Production teams.
- Identify technical issues early in development and recommend solutions that improve fit, construction, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.
- Maintain consistency of fit standards across product categories while supporting seasonal product development timelines.
- Stay current on garment construction techniques, patternmaking technologies, materials, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Apparel Design, Fashion Merchandising, Technical Design, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
- 2+ years of experience in apparel technical design or garment development.
- Strong understanding of garment construction, patternmaking, grading, fit evaluation, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience creating and maintaining detailed technical specifications and Tech Packs.
- Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems
- Experience with 3D software preferably Browzwear VStitcher (or comparable 3D software)
- Ability to interpret and review DXF pattern files.
- Experience communicating directly with domestic and overseas manufacturing partners.
Required Skills
- Adobe Illustrator
- Adobe Photoshop skills helpful but not required
- Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
- 3D Software experience is helpful but not required
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams
- Able to manage time and shift priorities as needed
