Job Summary

Responsible for styling and construction of wigs and facial hair, designing and supervising show makeup as needed, and overseeing styling of actor’s own hair and makeup as needed, for 7 productions for Pioneer Theatre Company, a professional regional theater, and 4 mainstage productions for the University of Utah’s Department of Theatre.

Collaborate and coordinate with the costume designer, often executing their design and filling in the gaps as needed. This is not a separate design position in traditional sense.

o Must be familiar with period styles and costume history

o Must be able to read and analyze scripts for possible hair and makeup requirements

o Must be able to clearly express ideas, and be good at research

o Must be able to meet deadlines

o Must be able to work with and handle a wide variety of personalities

o Must have experience handling budgets

o Must be able to use a computer

o Must be organized

o Work closely with the costume crafts and millinery artists

o Work with stage management to arrange fittings

o Must have strong communication skills and be detail oriented

o Must attend production meetings for all PTC and U of U mainstage productions

o Must attend all rehearsals during dress rehearsal week to opening

o Must be familiar with AEA rules regarding wigs, makeup, and actors using their own hair.

o Teaching actors any makeup as needed for the productions, including making instructional makeup charts, and procurement of makeup as per AEA rules.

o Training wardrobe crew to handle, apply, and remove wigs and facial hair for performances.

o Maintaining the wigs and facial hair during run of production following AEA rules.

o Willingness to work with young students interested in hair and makeup design from the Department of Theatre, often mentoring and supervising them if they are assigned a mainstage design

o Training and utilizing student interns as necessary.

o Training wig and makeup crew for student mainstage productions

o Hiring assistants as budgeted.

o Procurement of wig studio supplies and materials.

Comments:

This position may be subject to call and might involve work on a holiday when a production is in dress rehearsals.

Minimum Qualifications

o A minimum of 3 years of professional experience

o Wig construction – fronts, toupees, full wigs, etc.

o Facial hair construction – beards, moustaches, sideburns

o Ventilating or hand-tying

o Wig setting and styling with human and/ or synthetic hair

o Cutting wigs into proper shape for setting and styling

o Experience rigging wigs and facial hair for quick changes

o Altering and repairing wigs and pieces

Experience constructing, applying, and removing prosthetics and connections to artists who can construct or do said special effects

Experience collaborating with the sound department during musicals
