Technical Designer – Ladies Activewear & Sportswear

Salary: $95,000 to $115,000 per hour

Position Overview

A growing apparel company is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Technical Designer to join its Ladies Activewear and Sportswear team in New York. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in transforming creative concepts into fully realized, high-quality products. You will create comprehensive technical specifications, ensure precise garment fit and construction, develop full production tech packs, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to align designs with brand standards, quality guidelines, and product timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Specifications: Develop and maintain comprehensive technical packages (tech packs) including detailed sketches, measurements, grading, and construction methods. Generate full bill of materials (BOM) and specify product packaging requirements (care/content labels, carton markings, fold/hanger packs, UPC codes, etc.).
  • Garment Fitting & Adjustments: Lead and conduct fit sessions on live models. Evaluate garment fit, function, and aesthetics, and clearly communicate necessary adjustments to maintain design integrity and product performance.
  • Sample Review: Partner with patternmakers and overseas manufacturers to review prototypes and pre-production samples, ensuring strict adherence to fit, quality, and design specifications.
  • Issue Resolution: Troubleshoot design and construction challenges throughout the development cycle, offering creative and practical solutions to balance functional goals with design vision.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work in close alignment with Design, Product Development, and Production teams to ensure all styles meet brand aesthetics, target delivery schedules, and cost guidelines.
  • Material & Construction Expertise: Leverage deep knowledge of activewear fabrics, trims, pattern-making, and specialized construction techniques to optimize garment execution.
  • Quality Assurance: Assist in defining and enforcing rigorous quality standards to ensure finished goods meet high standards for durability, comfort, and performance.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Technical Design, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5–10 years of technical design experience in the apparel industry with a focus on Ladies Activewear/Sportswear. Outerwear experience is a plus.
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced skill in Adobe Illustrator, PLM/CAD systems, garment construction, pattern-making, and fit analysis.
  • Precision & Detail: Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail regarding garment measurements, grading rules, and technical specifications.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for seamless collaboration with internal teams and offshore vendors.
  • Problem-Solving & Agility: Strong analytical capabilities with a proactive mindset. Ability to manage multiple projects, adapt to shifting priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced setting.
